The scene of the crime....

It was a dark and rainy night. The street lights flickered and shadows danced in the wild, stormy wind. It was only early evening but already the streets were deserted and an eerie emptiness had descended on the mountain.....

Inside, the fire crackled and roared; a puppy slept peacefully in its glow and a woman stood at the fridge door, searching the shelves for something, something. The house was being battered by rain and wind when suddenly an unwanted thought burst in to her brain. She grabbed the sharpest kitchen knife from the rack and headed outside, leaving the puppy alone in the uneasy warmth.

The intensity of the rain increased and the trees were being lashed by the fierce winds as she rushed to complete her task. A brilliant red oozed from the wounds rapidly and repeatedly inflicted but was quickly washed away with the rain, leaving maroon footprints in the mud. The job was done.

An hour later she sat watching TV, a tray of dinner on her knee. She had enjoyed Gardening Australia and then the news, knowing that her work was known only to her and that no-one would find the results until the next day and by then she would be far away. She wondered at the nature of human ingenuity and smiled at her brilliant scheme.

..... even under the cover of the winter night, alone and in the middle of a downpour, it was impossible to hide her passion for picking fresh vegetables from the garden and telling the world about her joy.

Aha, a partner in crime! Many a winter evening has found me out in the garden, flashlight in hand, searching for fresh veggies for dinner. What's a little storm in the face of a hunger for something fresh to eat?
